Presentation Focus

Achieving Accessibility in Colleges and Universities encourages faculty, staff and student councils to play a leadership role in creating accessible and inclusive post-secondary communities. In a personable and down-to-earth style, John Draper reminds audiences that equality is a fundamental right of all students. Drawing on his own college experience, he shares his insights on academic accommodation, accessible environments and inclusive campus activities. This presentation emphasizes that the key to success is dependent on the following:

  • A Vision for Success: Students, faculty and administrators must believe that it is possible and essential to create a post-secondary institution that is accessible to and inclusive of people who have disabilities.
  • Walk the Talk: Efforts and actions must demonstrate that every day colleges and universities are "walking the talk" of inclusion and accessibility.
  • Keep an Open Mind: Promoting positive attitudes about people's abilities is critical.
  • Promote Equal Access to Education: Individually and collectively we need to embrace our shared leadership role in ensuring equal access to education through academic accommodation, collaboration and accessibility.
