This is a story about a young boy and his best friend Matt. Matt has autism, and sometimes he gets frustrated or struggles with following instructions, but his best friend is there to help him in difficult situations, offering friendship and understanding instead of showing fear and judgement. His best friend does not pity Matt, but treats him as he would treat anyone. They have lots of fun together playing sports, going to the park, and swimming. Matt’s friend helps him to be part of the group and to feel included. When his friends show compassion, Matt is an active and fun participant in any group setting. Since We’re Friends focuses on the lesson of understanding and acceptance. The story covers a range of different situations related to Matt’s experience and the importance of friendships.
