Wheelmap.org is a free smartphone app that provides information about wheelchair accessible places. It is based on OpenStreetMap, and is available for iPhone, Android and Windows phones.
Wheelmap was developed in Germany in 2010. Over the last five years, users have gathered almost 600,000 entries, including approximately 300 new entries every day. The information on the maps comes from people who use the app and add the markings and entries. Wheelmap is worldwide, but the user-generated nature of the app means that information is available only in those cities and those locations where users have entered them.
Locations can be rated as wheelchair accessible, partially wheelchair accessible, not wheelchair accessible, or unknown. There is also a separate rating for the bathroom facilities.
Users of Wheelmaps can also participate as teams, to map out their neighbourhood. And users can join the MapMyDay Facebook page to spread the word. MapMyDay also held a worldwide event on December 3, 2015—the International Day of Persons with Disabilities—to encourage more people to participate in mapping their area. Users can also encourage other users through Google+ and Twitter.
The website includes ideas for businesses, cities, public authorities, associations, and the education sector to support MapMyDay.
