The US Business Leadership Network (USBLN) in collaboration with the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) developed the Disability Equality Index (DEI). This benchmarking tool rates corporations and businesses according to their policies and practices on disability and inclusion.
The DEI is intended to be objective, evaluative, and reflective. The tool measures areas including culture and leadership, enterprise-wide access, employment practices (including benefits, recruitment, retention/advancement and accommodations), and community engagement and support services. Companies who participate are provided technical support and assisted to identify ways in which they can improve their scores in future.
The DEI’s top-scoring companies for 2016 include American Airlines, Starbucks, TD Bank, Hewlett Packard, General Motors, and more. To keep informed of any announcements about the DEI, you can sign up to the mailing lists of both organizations.
Find out more about the DEI here, see the full list of top scorers here, and read a story about how Starbucks received its score here. The reward of good publicity helps encourage companies to adopt inclusive practices.
