The Discovery Conference is one of Canada’s premier innovation showcases where, for the past 12 years, some of the brightest minds in industry, academia, investment and government come together to display leading-edge technologies, best practices and research in areas of the environment, advanced health, digital media, energy, and communications technologies.
The conference in Toronto was also the stage where the winner of the Ontario Centres of Excellence Accessibility Tech Pitch Competition was announced by Reza Moridi, Minister of Research, Innovation and Science in partnership with the Accessibility Directorate of Ontario.
Twenty-four Ontario-based companies were selected to participate in the showcase from a number of interested applicants. Five finalists had the chance to make a 10-minute pitch of their innovative product or service idea to a panel of judges followed by a 10-minute question and answer period.
This year’s winner was MyndTech Inc. who received a $20,000 award to assist with further development of their accessibility solution. MyndTech Inc. is a medical technology company which caters to people with paralysis due to stroke or spinal cord injury by researching and developing innovative therapies designed to improve function and independence. MyndMove is the company’s first product released to market and is a non-invasive rehabilitation therapy combining patient participation, therapist expertise and an eight-functional electrical stimulation system (FES) device to treat patients with upper-limb paralysis. MyndMove provides therapy for the full arm with the ability to reach and grasp.
The Tech Pitch Competition focuses on improving accessibility and provides companies with the opportunity to display their work and network with industry experts, investors, government funders and the accessibility community. It is also a platform where companies can build awareness of the work being done in their field. The competition is the highlight of the Discovery Conference with a focus on innovation and inclusion that has a positive impact on the lives of those living with a disability and those companies with a passion in innovation technology.
