Discover Ability Network

Today’s successful businesses are finding ways to build diversity into their workplace. And, it just got a little easier for employers in the Province of Ontario to connect with talented persons with disabilities looking for work with the launch of a new online portal. The Discover Ability Network emphasizes the advantages of hiring persons with disabilities and leads employers down the hiring-process road to connect with this previously untapped talent.

The new tool means employers will now be able to fill vacant positions with the right talent. According to Richard Koroscil, interim president and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC), the benefits to commercial companies are significant, “Businesses will see improvements in productivity, increased engagement with employees, less turnover and reduced costs of training when hiring employees with disabilities,” says Koroscil.

The web portal, http://www.dicoverability.network/, includes a six-step guide on how businesses can hire people with disabilities, which the Ability Network hopes will potentially bring more accessible and inclusive workplaces on board. The benefits companies can glean from hiring people with disabilities have already been proven to include:

· increasing the size of its skilled labour pool;

· reducing costs associated with turnover, training and safety;

· improving the engagement of all employees;

· harnessing the value of innovative processes and new perspectives; and

· attracting an underserved consumer market with $55 billion of spending power per year in Canada.

An OCC survey recently showed 30 per cent of employers indicated they were unable to find the talent they needed. This new initiative bridges the gap between what talent is required and what talent is available in an overlooked sector of the population. The Discover Ability Network will be holding webinars and seminars around the province targeted at businesses to better understand the benefits of hiring people with disabilities.
