In this first-person piece published in the Toronto Star, Rania Mirza, an elementary teacher in the Toronto area, reflects on how teachers set the tone for their classrooms, and that the classroom environment the teacher creates has a huge impact on the children who learn there.
“As educators, we know students given a supportive environment will explore and learn,” says Ms. Mirza. “Teachers model what it means to be equitable and inclusive through the resources we select, our classroom instruction and our parent and community partnerships.”
Students often look to teachers for answers. I’m not afraid to tell them I’m searching for answers too. I don’t know if we as teachers or the current educational system do enough to help our students’ grow.
