The International Training Centre of the International Labor Organization (ITILCoCentre), in partnership with Cornell University, has created an online self-learning course named “Disability in the Workplace: A Global Perspective.” The 90-minute course is designed for employers and HR professionals, to enable them to design and implement a disability-inclusive strategy.
As a member of the European Union, Malta’s National Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has created a comprehensive set of guidelines for designing public spaces. A set of “Access for All Design Guidelines” are a requirement for all EU member countries. This is a technical guide, primarily designed to be followed by architects and engineers, and would be useful to any organization considering a renovation.
People with disabilities navigating the streets of Edmonton will soon have a new tool to try out. The “Click ’n’ Push” app will measure how much force a person in a wheelchair exerts while navigating the city, and then predict the degree of difficulty of a route, taking into account the user’s strength.
Non-profit organization RespectAbility has launched “The Hollywood Disability Toolkit: The RespectAbility Guide to Inclusion in the Entertainment Industry.” The toolkit, which is available free online, aims to assist the Hollywood entertainment machine with facts and sources to create opportunities for people with disabilities.

Toronto masters student Maayan Ziv wonders every day of her life whether she’ll be able to get where she needs to go that day. Just about everything is online, she explains in this video, but until now, accessibility was a roll of the dice. Getting ready to go out on a Friday night, the twenty-five year old says she could find out how much the beer was going to be that night, and the specials, the ratings and reviews, “but not whether a place is accessible.” Maayan uses a wheelchair due to muscular dystrophy. “I have to ask this every day. This is a problem in my life. There are millions of people who can benefit,” she says. “I have to do this.”
