From Canada’s west coast, Recreation Inclusion Victoria has collected a robust list of resources on the ways and benefits of including people with disabilities in community sports and recreation.
The Business Improvement Association (BIA) recently hosted a Wine Festival at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery (accessible venue) in Oshawa, Ontario. This evening hosted ten wineries from over 200 located in the Niagara Peninsula, Lake Erie, North Shore, Pelee Island and Prince Edward County in the Province of Ontario.

Toronto masters student Maayan Ziv wonders every day of her life whether she’ll be able to get where she needs to go that day. Just about everything is online, she explains in this video, but until now, accessibility was a roll of the dice. Getting ready to go out on a Friday night, the twenty-five year old says she could find out how much the beer was going to be that night, and the specials, the ratings and reviews, “but not whether a place is accessible.” Maayan uses a wheelchair due to muscular dystrophy. “I have to ask this every day. This is a problem in my life. There are millions of people who can benefit,” she says. “I have to do this.”
Canada defines itself by bridges, not walls. This is the sentiment of Canada’s Supreme Court Chief Justice, Beverley McLachlin, who will step down from her position at the end of this year. McLachlin said “Canada still defines itself by inclusion, by what it embraces, not exclusively by what it rejects.”
The Evenbreak Best Practice Portal is a new tool designed to help employers and their employees create inclusive workplaces. The portal covers a variety of subjects such as how to interview a candidate and bring on board new employees with a disability. The advice comes in the form of videos, from leaders who have already pioneered a way through the minefield of barriers and red tape, so employers and their staff do not have to start from scratch and can adapt the advice to their own situation.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), with the help of a grant from the Broadcasting Accessibility Fund, has expanded a successful pilot project which makes some of its radio broadcasts accessible to audiences who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Two programs, The Current and As It Happens, are now posting transcripts online for audiences to read, print and share.
