Change management consultant Jonathan H. Westover is the author of the article “Creating a Workplace Culture of Belonging, Diversity and Inclusivity,” which was recently featured on Forbes.com.

Westover addresses the difference between “belonging,” “diversity”and “inclusivity” in a clear-sighted manner. He identifies eight important steps as being needed to advance belonging, diversity and inclusivity in the workplace:

  • Educate your leaders and invest in meaningful diversity training.

  • Listen to employees and establish a shared vision.

  • Form an inclusion council and be proactive about developing specific inclusion initiatives.

  • Create opportunities that appropriately connect with employees and foster better social bonds.

  • Create opportunities to interact with and celebrate employee difference.

  • Create employee resource groups and establish mentoring initiatives.

  • Hold better meetings, where all views are welcome and sought out.

  • Report goals and measure progress.
